MILAN – Nestlé and Carrefour have announced the signing of an SLBP (Sustainability Linked Business Plan) for the French market. This is the first agreement of its kind that the French chain has concluded in the coffee sector; similar agreements have already been signed in France with companies of the likes of Coca-Cola, Suntory, Mondelēz International, and Lesieur (vegetable oils).
Carrefour is the second-largest competitor in the French large-scale retail sector, behind E. Leclerc.
The collaboration between Nestlé and Carrefour, which is complementary to other existing commercial deals, is structured around the three priorities underlying the Swiss giant’s CSR approach:
- reducing virgin plastic in the packaging of the Nescafé, Nescafé Dolce Gusto and Ricoré brands;
- increasing the share of green coffee from regenerative agriculture to help improve soil health, water resources and biodiversity, and strengthen producers’ resilience to climate change;
- pursuing the decarbonisation of the logistics chain through the use of alternative fuels.
This initiative is part of Nestlé’s commitment to sustainability throughout the supply chain, in particular under the Nescafé Plan.
In 2024, nearly a third (32%) of the green coffee used by Nescafé, Nestlé’s flagship coffee brand, originated from regenerative agriculture.
This result goes well beyond the initial target of 20% to be achieved by 2025.
The adoption of these practices, combined with other initiatives under the Nescafé Plan, has reduced greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of green coffee on farm level by between 20% to 40%.
Nestlé is also investing in research and innovation to create more sustainable packaging and reduce the use of virgin plastic. Particular focus is being given to paper-based packaging and compostable pods for the NEO Dolce Gusto brand.
