Swiss coffee trader Volcafe has appointed Raphaelle Peinado as its new Sustainability Director, effective 1 September 2024.

In a press release, Zürich-based Volcafe said Peinado will lead and implement the expansion of its strategic global sustainability initiatives and further develop its sustainability partnerships.

The company’s Sustainability Strategy is built around three key pillars – sustainable profitability, regenerative practices and responsible citizenship.

“With a strong emphasis on commercial growth and partnerships, as well as a wealth of experience in project management, I am very confident that Raphaelle will successfully drive our efforts to deliver on our vision of a thriving, sustainable coffee business for all,” said Tim Scharrer, Chief Operating Officer, Volcafe.

Peinado joins Volcafe from French soft commodities trading group Sucden, where she served as Cocoa Sustainability Director since May 2022. She previously worked for international shipping group Transmar and social enterprise Ecotribal in both consultant and Sustainability Manager roles.

“Cocoa and coffee farmers in producing countries face many similar challenges, so I very much look forward to bringing lessons learned from the cocoa sector and adapting them as needed to the context and specific challenges of the coffee sector,” Peinado added.

Founded in 1851, Volcafe is one of the world’s largest coffee merchants, specialising in green coffee procurement, processing in 15 origin countries and distribution to roaster partners. The business supplies coffee beans for more than 66 billion cups of coffee a year globally.
