Coffee News Recap, 20 Mar: ICO reports a 10% drop in coffee prices for Feb, BUNN acquired by Ali Group & other stories

Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the week.

Editor’s note

Recent forecasts of a bumper 2025/26 crop for Brazil have weighed on the coffee market, as the ICO’s latest report shows prices fell by 10% in February. StoneX predicts a record 75.3 million bags for the next harvest, a 20.8% increase from the previous year.

At the recent annual NCA convention, industry analysts discussed potential market swings for this year. Many questioned whether coffee could follow the same downward trajectory as cocoa, which plummeted by 70% after rising above US$12,000/tonne in December 2024.

Several market analysts assert that arabica futures could fall as low as US$1.80/lb by year-end. But with conflict escalating in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz still effectively closed, the coffee industry faces rising costs for logistics, shipping, and energy.

The price of Brent crude oil rose to US$116 a barrel on Thursday morning, approaching the highest level since the conflict started at the end of February. Many are claiming that it could climb as high as US$200 per barrel unless cargo vessels are permitted to pass through the Strait in the coming weeks.

Coffee is not an isolated industry. What happens in one corner of the world can have a profound effect on producers, traders, roasters, and consumers in another. With no clear end to the war in sight, the coffee industry must stay vigilant and well-informed.
