MILAN – Following the announcement of a possible postponement of the entry into force of the Eudr (European Union Deforestation Regulation), Fairtrade International has issued the following statement.
“Fairtrade International takes note of the European Commission’s proposal to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by 12 months until 30 December 2026.
We recognize that many stakeholders have made significant investments to comply with the EUDR, and we applaud their forest protection efforts. At the same time, we have also seen first-hand the challenges that small-scale farmers have faced in collecting geolocation data due to high costs, technical complexity, inadequate infrastructure, and the disconnect between EU regulations and the daily realities of farming.
Fairtrade will continue its EUDR work with the same momentum to support farmers with their readiness. This includes providing geolocation data collection training and guidance, offering deforestation monitoring and risk assessment reports, and providing a secure and consent-based data exchange platform for producers and their trade partners.
Fairtrade’s commitment to forest protection and EUDR remains unchanged, and we believe the legislation will help protect the world’s forests, fight climate change, and promote biodiversity. We encourage operators to continue their commitment to EUDR compliance preparedness by investing in their supply chains to ensure that the burden does not fall to producers.”
