Coffee News Recap, 24 Jan: Conab cuts estimates for Brazil’s 2024-25 harvest by 1.6%, Dubai Coffee Auction announced for 10 & 11 Feb & other stories

Every Friday, Perfect Daily Grind rounds up the top coffee industry news from the week.

Editor’s note

Conab, part of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, reduced its estimate of the country’s 2024-25 harvest by 600,000 60kg bags this week. The downward revision, largely expected, is the result of continued adverse weather conditions impacting Brazil’s harvests.

Production volumes in the key-growing region Minas Gerais, the largest arabica-producing state, were lower than in 2023-24. Robusta yields across the country were also down by 9.6% on the previous harvest season.

Brazil’s position as the world’s top coffee producer influences the entire market, so downcasts for the 2024-25 harvest are likely to drive coffee futures up, contributing to ongoing market volatility that producers, traders, and roasters are grappling with.

As the C price hovers around US $3.40/lb, demand for consistent, affordable coffee will keep rising. Simultaneously, however, interest in exclusive, high-end lots persists as consumers seek exciting, distinctive flavours.

Some roasters struggle to gain access to these coffees, but in recent years, virtual and hybrid auctions have emerged as a gateway to entry. On 10 and 11 February, M-Cultivo and the DMCC will co-host the Dubai Coffee Auction, giving international roasters access to exceptional lots from some of the world’s top producers.

Specialty coffee brands increasingly need to offer the best of both worlds: Reliable, lower-price point options alongside more exclusive, higher-quality lots. By doing so, they can differentiate in a fiercely competitive market, positioning themselves to better weather the storm.
